Introduction
My first experience of being fired or "cut" was a shock.
I was part of a men's support team for more than seven years. We called ourselves a team, rather than a group because in teams, you can be cut; in groups, everyone can participate, even if they fail to meet standards.
Once a week for seven years, we met and helped one another with personal and professional issues. We were men with different backgrounds and experiences—a set designer, an entrepreneur, a photographer, a writer, a computer professional, a martial arts instructor and me, the head hunter, all connected from our experiences with one another and committed to supporting one another get what we wanted out of life.
It was pretty common for meetings to become stale so, after a while, we needed to re-evaluate what we did and how we did it. We all agreed to meet a particular weekend to work on this when a day later I discovered that the date we agreed to conflicted with another meeting I wanted to attend in Philadelphia .
I called the others and asked that we change the date to another one.
“But you made a commitment,” one said.
“Yes, but it was before I knew it conflicted with this “once a year meeting” that I always attend was a short train ride from New York City where I lived at that time.
“Yes, but, you made a commitment to us and we've all set aside the time to meet!”
We went in circles for a while until I decided that I would go to Philadelphia to attend the meeting and told them that I intended to do so. One man said that there might be dire consequences if I missed the weekend.
When I returned from Philadelphia , there was a message waiting for me on my answering machine.
I had been cut from the team.
I was hurt and furious.
Even though I had received a warning, I never expected to be cut and now had to work through the many feelings that surfaced after I was fired.
