The Big Picture

Layoffs happened before; they will happen again. As a matter of fact, layoffs happen all the time . . . it's just that it may happen to you!

 

Every few years, things change in business and, with those changes, come layoffs.

Once upon a time, there were two companies—Burroughs and Univac. Then there was one—Unisys. Thousands of jobs disappeared as they did each time a company changed its business focus.

I remember when Japanese automakers started to successfully sell cars in the US and automobile workers in Detroit were laid off in large numbers.

Another time, automation replaced jobs in manufacturing.

Outsourcing to Asia caused companies to layoff knowledge workers.

NAFTA sent jobs to Mexico .

On and on.

 

As I write this, the current crisis is the result of the sub-prime collapse causing jobs to be eliminated, not just in the financial services community, but across the economy. Then, on top of that, gas prices rose to record prices in 4-6 weeks time.

Wall Street came to the brink of collapse only to be rescued by the government

Businesses and consumers have cut back on spending. The news every night scares people into believing the world is going to end.

 

Much of this has happened before.

 

It is happening now.

 

It will happen again

 

AND things like ths will probably affect you now or in the future by putting your job in jeopardy.

 

I have no idea what the trigger will be for layoffs in the future; I just know that layoffs will happen.
